Shared Services Type
When you create a new instance for an AWS deployment, you can choose the shared services type: Standard or Scaled. This option is not available for Azure deployments.
This choice represents a cost-based decision on the size and scope of the data warehouse instance, in terms of the number of expected users, the amount of data storage, the complexity of the workload, and your performance requirements. In general, scaled shared services are recommended when you expect to have more than 100 active users and expect to need more than 5TB of data storage. When you select Scaled Shared Services, the instance acquires more resources to run the services that support data warehousing in a cloud environment. Although you have to make the choice up front, it is easy to change the instance later to either scale it up or scale it down. You can have a mixture of standard and scaled instances running within the same cloud deployment.
Tip: Because this feature scales shared services up and down, scaling up a standard instance is a faster operation if another instance in the same deployment is already scaled.
The shared services choice that was made during installation and deployment of the CloudFormation stack for Yellowbrick does not affect your ability to modify instances in Yellowbrick Manager.
The current shared services type for a given data warehouse instance is displayed in the Dashboard.
Shared Services per Data Warehouse Instance
You can change the shared services type you selected anytime. Select the instance in the Dashboard, then select Actions > Change > Shared Services:
When you click Update on this screen, you will see a warning, and you will be asked to accept the results of the change before proceeding. Changing the shared services type is a resizing operation that may take some time to complete and results in the following behavior:
- Immediate and automatic suspension of the instance
- Termination of all running queries
- Inability to resume the instance until the resize operation is complete (the instance will resume automatically at that point)
You can monitor the Resize Instance operation under Tasks > Jobs.
Shared Services for CDWM
Users with consumeradmin
privileges can also resize the Cloud Data Warehouse Manager (CDWM) from Standard to Scaled shared services (or vice versa). This change resizes the observability (monitoring) resources for your installation.
Select Configuration > Actions > Change > ****:
Yellowbrick recommends that if you change some or all of your data warehouse instances from Standard to Scaled, you should also change CDWM to Scaled. However, this step is not required and you will not be prompted to make this change.
